The Thule 887XT Slipstream XT Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier is a premium load-assist carrier whose special design allows for easier loading and unloading of boats from the back and improved protection of vehicle exteriors as you do so. With increased frame tubing wall thickness, the 887XT Slipstream better resists bow impacts and heavy kayak loads for a stronger carrier overall. This sturdy carrier is constructed with double-coated, heavy-duty steel that resists corrosion and will stand up to a lifetime of use. The 887XT Slipstream has four touch points of padded support that conform to the hull of the boat for added protection as well as a sliding roller that extends beyond the back of the vehicle for maximum support. The new pivoting front saddles provide greater compatibility for secure transport of all kayaks types, and fishing kayaks in particular. The 887XT Slipstream contains two slide quick-releases instead of four which can be positioned on either side of unit to provide ultimate ease of use. In addition, an extra one-inch frame extension forward of the front load bar improves the front saddle adjustability for a better fit. Finally, the 887XT Slipstream XT comes complete with all the straps necessary to transport one kayak, including two load straps with padded buckles and two ratcheting bow/stern ropes.

Although I can attach the rack to my factory bars, I cannot easily slide the body of the rack back and forth. And by easily, I mean it takes a rubber mallet to get the rack to slide. Not fun. With this carrier system I can lift one end onto the rear roller and then lift and push the back end of the kayak until it is on the roof. I mounted the unit on a trailblazer with rectangular shaped cross bars. It was easy to position the unit so that the rear rollers slid far enaugh to the back to prevent scratching the vehicle when loading and then the unit slid forward to a perfect carrying position. Loading is easy, transporting is safe and quiet with less drag on the vehicle than with the J bars. This unit doesn't create very much noise when empty and sits low enaugh on the roof to allow entry to most parking garages. It requires a lot of effort to move the sliding rack either forward or backwards, and I have already loosened the cams as much as possible. I even tried to completely loosen all four cams to see if the sliders would move freely, but there was still significant resistance. I am considering some Teflon spray or graphite dry lubricant at this point, or an exchange or return to Thule. |
